Game Maker has been written to make it easier for people to design and make their own computer games. Though you may not be able to make games like Quake (they take teams of programmers years to make), you can still make games that are lots of fun to play. Plenty of people love to play Tetris, Pacman and other simple platform, puzzle or shooting games. You can make simple games such as these with Game maker, or you can even make quite elaborate strategy games, first-person shooters, third-person shooters, massively multiplayer online games and simulations.
You don't have to write programming code to be able to make games with Game Maker, though it does have a built in programming language to give you full control of your game if you want.
Game Maker comes in two versions: Lite and Pro. Lite is free of charge, but for a small amount of money you can buy the Pro version which has lots more features. It can be downloaded from the official Yoyo Games website. Game Maker runs under Windows 98, 2000, ME, XP or Vista. You can also download resource packs that contain extra sprites, sounds and examples from the official Game Maker site.
It is worthwhile also downloading the extra resource packs available from the Game Maker site. They will give you extra sprites, sounds, backgrounds etc. http://www.yoyogames.com/make/resources/
Once you have downloaded the program, work down the links on the left, and you will be making great games in no time.
This web contains numerous demonstration videos. You will recognise them by the 'eye' icon . To run these you will need the free Flash plug in. If you do not already have it, it can be downloaded for free from here.
This site is being adapted for GameMaker version 7, though many of the tutorials will still work for version 6.
To run version 7 of Game Maker, a modern PC (Pentium or higher) running
Windows 2000, XP or Vista is required (Game Maker 6 will run on Win98). After installation the
program uses about 10 MB disk space. The program requires at least 65000 colors (high color,
16-bit). It requires at least 800x600 screen resolution. A 3D graphics card
compatible with DirectX 8.0 or higher and with at least 32 MB of video memory is required. Also a DirectX
8.0 compatible sound card is required. Make sure all graphics and sound card
drivers are up to date. DirectX 8.0 or higher is required (not included).
